Real Madrid have kept their La Liga title hopes alive as they came back from a goal behind to beat Atletico Madrid by two goals to one despite missing star-striker Cristiano Ronaldo to injury.
Ronaldo, who picked up a thigh strain in mid week against Borussia Dortmund, was rested for tonight's match in order for him to be ready for Tuesday's return leg at the Bernabeu.
Atletico Madrid took the lead in their quest to overtake rivals Real Madrid in La Liga after Falcao headed home a quality cross at the far post in the 4th minute.
Di Maria then whipped in a teasing ball from a free-kick in the 13th minute which deflected off of Juanfran and into the net.
The match was ill-tempered like most Madrid derbies but it was Real who would go on to snatch the three points when Argentina Di Maria scored from an acute angle with a low strike into the corner just after the hour mark.
Barcelona only managed a 2-2 draw, so Real Madrid are now 11 points behind the Blaugrana in the race for the La Liga title.
