Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid came extremely close to overturning a 4-1 deficit in the Champions League semi-final second leg as they won 2-0 on the night at the Bernabeu which was not enough.
Real Madrid would need to score at least three goals against a formidable Dortmund side going into the game, and it was clear from the beginning that Dortmund had a defensive mindset.
Ronaldo started the game, despite not being at full fitness, and came close to breaking the deadlock with a wonderful acrobatic effort in the first half.
It was Dortmund who looked likeliest to score in the second period as they missed a flurry of chances, but the game finally kicked into life in the final ten minutes.
Real Madrid got their first when sub Benzema turned home Ozil's low cross in the 83rd minute. Sergio Ramos then struck a thunderbolt from Benzema's clever pass to give the Bernabeu a huge lift and a new belief in the 88th minute.
English official Howard Webb added 5 minutes for injury time as Real urgently tried to score the decisive third but despite their efforts, Los Blancos fell frustratingly short.
Borussia Dortmund will now advance to the Champions League final where they will likely face fellow German team Bayern Munich who face Barcelona tomorrow.
